New Pfizer contract: Storage and distribution of controlled substances in Denmark

New Pfizer contract: Storage and distribution of controlled substances in Denmark

Logistics concept takes special legal impositions into account - In addition to conventional storage and distribution, active temperature control also in the range between two and eight degrees centigrade

Weinheim, 6th June 2011 - Around 300 different controlled substances which the pharmaceutical company Pfizer manufactures worldwide for the Danish market will now be stored, commissioned and distributed in Denmark with assistance from trans-o-flex. This has greatly extended the service organised by trans-o-flex Logistik-Service GmbH for Pfizer in Denmark. trans-o-flex was already responsible for the direct supply of the Danish customers from the Pfizer warehouse in Karlsruhe.
Statutory provisions according to which controlled substances may only be distributed in Denmark if they were previously stored in the country itself are the backdrop of the new logistics contract. "From a logistics perspective, a pure cross-docking of the goods would also have been possible", says Peter Astor, Managing Director of trans-o-flex Logistik-Service. "In this regard, additional synergies could have been achieved for instance with the products which were already being shipped from Karlsruhe to Denmark." The alternative concept was developed and implemented in collaboration with the Danish partner 3D Logistik. Located ten kilometres away from the hub where the other Pfizer goods are transhipped, 3D Logistik has taken over the warehouse of a pharmaceutical wholesaler for the contract expansion. The goods are delivered and stored there directly from various Pfizer production sites. The controlled substances are stored and distributed both conventionally and with active temperature control. This entails constantly maintaining a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees centigrade.
In the day-to-day business of the cooperation, the commissioning orders are received at the Danish logistics service provider in electronic form by 3:00 p.m. The employees pick and pack the products that very same day and transport them bundled during the night to the nearby hub, from where all consignments are generally delivered all over Denmark by 3:00 p.m. In addition, Iceland is supplied once a month by groupage freight.
For Patric Schulz, Director Logistics and Supply Operations Mid Europe of Pfizer, the solution devised has clear advantages: "With trans-o-flex Logistik-Service, we have only one contact, who is responsible for compliance with all our quality requirements and who has also implemented our international requirements quickly and flexibly. This also included the Danish partner being provided with thermoboxes in an uncomplicated way for the delivery of small quantities of temperature-sensitive consignments."

Facts and Figures about the Danish trans-o-flex partner 3D Logistik:
Founded in 1999, the company 3D Logistik is an express service that has acquired special know-how in the pharmaceutical sector. Both night express services and deliveries with 24-hour service are organised on the entire Danish mainland from the three locations in Kolding, Glostrup and Aalborg. The owner-managed company most recently achieved a turnover of around ten million euros.
